LaDainian Tomlinson: Time to Retire?

Yesterday marked the end of an era in San Diego, when the Chargers released LaDainian Tomlinson.  The move was expected and frankly a year overdue.

The L.T. that we saw last year was a shadow of his former self.  He failed to reach the century mark in any game and finished the season with a paltry 3.3 yards per carry average.

The culmination was a 12 carry, 24-yard effort in the Chargers loss to the Jets in Divisional Round in yet another playoff disappointment for the Bolts.  He was outgained by Darren Sproles, who had only three carries the entire game.

Now L.T. is will be 31 before the starts of the 2010 season, but claims he still has something left in the tank and wants to continuing playing.

Chargers Draft Review

San Diego Chargers
Picks: DE/LB Larry English, G Louis Vasquez, DT Vaughn Martin, G Tyronne Green, RB Gartrell Johnson, CB Brandon Hughes, S Kevin Ellison, WR Demetrius Byrd
The Chargers won their last four games of the season to make the playoffs and won their first round playoff game against the Colts before losing to eventual champions Pittsburgh.  One of the biggest surprises in the first round was when the Chargers took Larry English.
The Chargers already had great outside linebackers in Shawne Merriman and Shawn Phillips so the pick was a bit surprising.  English will provide insurance behind Merriman, who was hurt all of last year and is set to be a free agent after this upcoming year.  In the third round the Chargers took guard Louis Vasquez from Texas Tech.  Vasquez has great strength and showcased it at the scouting combine where he posted 39 reps of 225 pounds, the most by any player in the draft.  Vasquez will compete to start and will help the running game when he gets in.  Defensive tackle Vaughn Martin went to college in Canada where he played at Western Ontario and is a very intriguing developmental prospect.  In the seventh round the Chargers may have gotten a steal in receiver Demetrius Byrd.  Byrd was projected to go in the middle rounds before getting in a car accident a week before the draft.  Currently Byrd is doing okay and is expected to make a full recovery.  The Chargers first pick of English was a bit questionable but they didn’t have many glaring needs and they made some solid choices later.
