Browns Draft Review

Cleveland Browns
Picks: C Alex Mack, WR Brian Robiskie, WR Mohamed Massaquoi, DE David Veikune, LB Kaluka Maiava, CB Don Carey, CB Coye Francies, RB James Davis

The Browns were a popular playoff pick for 2008 but were a disappointment finishing 4-12.  The Browns fired their head coach and general manager replacing them with Eric Mangini and George Kokinis respectively.  The Browns started out with the fifth pick in the draft but traded down three times and didn’t make their first selection until the 21st pick.  While trading down they picked up a second round pick, two sixth round picks, and three role players from the Jets, Mangini’s old team.  With their first pick the Browns selected center Alex Mack.  This was a little high for Mack but he probably wasn’t going to last until the Browns next pick.  Mack should be an impact center similar to what Mangini had in New York with Nick Mangold.  In the second round the Browns took a pair of receivers in Brian Robiskie and Mohamed Massaquoi.  The Browns are thin behind Braylon Edwards with the probable loss of Donte Stallworth due to his legal issues.  Robiske is good possession receiver though he probably will never be a number one receiver in the NFL.  Massaquoi was Matthew Stafford’s top target at Georgia butwill take some time to develop.  Their other second round pick, David Veikune, will try and make the transition from college defensive end to outline linebacker in the pros.  The Browns also had a nice pair of sixth round picks in Coye Francies and James Davis.  Francies has the tools to develop into a nice nickel corner and Davis was a top rated running back coming into his senior season but fell after a sub par season.  The Browns may not have gotten any stars in this draft but they needed to fill a lot of holes and did a decent job of that by trading down and acquiring more picks.
